Buying a Timeshare 101 - What You Absolutely Need to Know

Looking for Your Share

If you’re the usual consumer who works hard for your money, you’re also probably the type who likes taking a vacation every now and then, just to make it feel like it was worth all that effort. Of course, you really shouldn’t blow all your savings into a single vacation because reality (and your budget) will come back with a vengeance the very next workday. That’s why timeshares are a great idea for the cash-conscious and vacation-loving.

Is It A Worthy Investment?

An important thing you have to remember before getting involved in the timeshare market is that, when you buy timeshares, it’s exactly like buying real estate or actual property, although on a more limited basis. A timeshare is most often a contractual right to use a property or facilities that is shared, as the name suggests, between any number of timeshare holders. Depending on the type of timeshare that you buy, you can actually treat it as an asset – you can pass it on to your heirs, you could liquidate it or you could trade it with someone else. These reasons contribute to the need for any potential buyer – especially you – to do a whole lot of research before investing in a timeshare.

Bigger Name, Better Benefits

If you’re a novice at buying timeshares or you don’t have much experience at dealing with people who sell timeshares, it’s usually the best course of action to look for a timeshare for sale that’s being sold by a big and reputable company. Sure, there’s a big market out there for new timeshares for sales and even timeshares for private resale, but you’re never entirely sure that you’ll be dealing with a trustworthy person. The same is true when you deal with timeshare auctions or online deals; since you’ve never seen it before, that eBay timeshare you’re going to end up with might just be a lemon. Trust me – you’re going to feel safer if you know you’re dealing with a company that has a reputation to protect. Ebay is a fantastic way to get an awesome deal on a timeshare, but make certain you are buying a timeshare managed by a reputable company.

Believe it or not, there are many well-known corporations that offer their property to buyers on a timeshare basis. As a result, properties like Disney timeshares, Marriott timeshares and Hilton timeshares are now available to you and me. If you’d like something a little more generic, there are companies that deal specifically with timeshares in a particular area. If you’re the type who likes going to a particular town or state for vacations, you might want to look for a company that specializes in Florida timeshares, Las Vegas timeshares or timeshares for wherever you want to vacation.

Research, Research, Research

With the advent of the Internet, researching for information on the web has become an infinitely convenient experience. Sites like Google and Yahoo make sure that you’re never more than a search query away from whatever you want to find. Another good thing about search engines is that they often rank pages according to popularity. That means you’ll most probably get the bigger and more well-known timeshare companies at the top of your list when you start searching on an online engine.

Another good way to find a potential timeshare seller or provider is to visit forums. There’s no better advertisement than word of mouth because you get testimonials from people who have actually seen and experienced the place. Aside from getting insights and reviews, it saves you from having to visit the place yourself. You can also gauge how trustworthy the information is based on how much you trust the person or how knowledgeable they are from previous forum posts and reviews.

Check the Corporate Profile

Since we’re talking about looking for a large and reputable companies here, we’re not going to forget the most visible metric of all – sheer size. Just drive down the road and see how many agents, offices and partner establishments a particular company has. That will help you approximate just how big and trustworthy a company is.

Take a look at their corporate website and their quality of customer service. Are they organized and pleasant? Your experience from the get-go of dealing with the company is a good indicator of how far the company will go to please you, the customer. If you happened to land a company that made you visit their seedy office three cities away, or redirected you to their ho-hum website with no information and even less organization, don’t expect top-of-the-line services.

Be a Wise Buyer

I’m almost certain that you didn’t rush yourself when you got your first house or first apartment. It should be the same when you’re buying timeshares. Take the time to research and to ask around before you make your final decision. Sure, it might take you longer to get that annual vacation you’ve always dreamed of, but lying in the hammock on the beach of a stellar resort served by professional staff will make all that searching worth it.
